Layers and layers…Where’s the real you? An onion is usually what first comes to mind when you use an illustration or object lesson regarding layers. My thought, an onion is too neat. In relation to my life, my personality, my make up, I think of garlic. Garlic, my “Stinky Rose!” Garlic is much more complicated than an onion. A bulb of garlic has numerous cloves attached to one another neatly covered with thin layers of additional skin. Layer after layer you peel til you get to a clove, that is covered in yet more layers.

Yes, that closely describes our make up.

What is beneath the surface of our outward appearance?

We have gifts, talents, dreams, hopes, desires and even fears bulging from within. Just like the garlic bulb they are not discovered til you go beneath the outer skin. We carefully choose what within ourselves we will allow to be uncovered and released. Some layers we don’t want to be exposed. We are hesitant, reluctant, scared, protective. Yet, the clove of a garlic cannot be enjoyed or experienced if left in it’s hidden state.

Even when you leave the bulb whole and you bake or roast it, the garlic softens. The flavor is wonderful when the layers of skin are removed. A little “heat” in our lives (circumstances, situations, experiences, challenges) they too can add substance, strength and character to who we are. We just have to learn to remove the many layers that tend to cover who we really are. When our true selves are revealed others can enjoy all and who we were created to be.

A head or bulb of garlic usually contains about 10 cloves. 1 clove = 1 teaspoon chopped garlic = 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic = 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder = 1/2 teaspoon garlic flakes = 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic = 1/2 teaspoon garlic juice

…Wow, look at all the equivalents in a clove of “Stinky Rose.” Now think of all the versatility that resides in you underneath all those layers. Amazing!!
